The Second Chance

This movie stars Christian singer and song writer Michael W. Smith and Jeff Obafemi Carr.

Second Chance Community Church is an inner city church planted by Pastor Jeremiah Jenkins in the midst of the Civil Rights movement.  Pastor Jeremiah is now senior pastor of The Rock, a mega-church that plants churches around the world and broadcasts its messages locally from a state of the art infrastructure in the suburbs.  Second Chance is now pastured by Jake Sanders who received Christ while in prison under the ministry of Pastor Jeremiah.  Pastor Jeremiah had done more than hold meetings at the prison, he had ventured out amongst the inmates who would otherwise never darken the door of a church or para-church meeting.  Second Chance is located just off a highway off-ramp and its land, still owned by The Rock, the mother church, is now coveted by the city.

The Associate Pastor at the Rock is Pastor Jenkins son, Ethan, who is a gifted author, song writer and musician.  Ethan is not as politically savvy as senior Pastor Jeremiah and his lack of skill in handling sensitive issues gets him assigned to the Second Chance to observe and learn.  It is at Second Chance that he realizes that the Gospel is more than broadcasting a message and planting churches around the world.  He also learns that the pastor of Second Chance might be a better disciple of his father than he.  He finds that ministry at Second Chance goes far beyond preaching and singing, and requires a hands-on approach, a living of the Christian life before the congregants and would be congregants, and involves far less attention and praise from the media.  The experience also brings to light that The Rock board of directors see the property of Second Chance as resource for funding its missions around the world, and have no concern for body of people comprising Second Chance.   Fortunately the movie draws to a close with pastors Jake and Ethan and Jeremiah Jenkins recognizing the second chance they have been given.

Second Chance saw limited release in 2006 and is now available on DVD.  See link above.

Luke 12:15 (KJV)  And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

Luke 20:46-47 (KJV)  Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts; {47} Which devour widows' houses, and for a show make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation.
