Not Easily Broken

Morris Chestnut stars as Dave Johnson, a former high school star athlete whose pro career was ruined by a knee injury.

The film starts with Dave Johnson’s wedding to his highschool sweetheart, Clarice. The ceremony is performed by Bishop Wilkes (Albert Hall) who spends some time explaining how marriage is a three-stranded cord comprising man, woman and God. He wraps a three-stranded cord around them and explains that for their marriage to survive, God must remain a part of it.

More than ten years later we see Dave as a general contractor and coach of a local youth team for many of whom he serves as a father-figure. Clarice (Taraji P. Henson) is an ambitious and successful real estate agent with no time to establish the family Dave desires. The film is based on a novel by Bishop T.D. Jakes of The Potter’s House, of the same name.

This is a great movie!! It packs a powerful message that is delivered in the commentary provided in Dave’s voice throughout and contains the real kernels of wisdom; just a few--

In commentary Dave tells us his desire to be a major league ball player with Hall of Fame numbers, a husband and Daddy, and that all was moving that way until the injury.

He explains how a thing cannot determine or state its purpose-- only its maker can do that; that God created man to be work, cultivate and protect, and in that role he was honored by his woman who looked to him as her hero, but perhaps because of her pain, or because their men forgot how to be heroic, or because they no longer needed or wanted protection, they became their own heros and man forgot who he was, and the world was turned upside down.

When Dave retreats into the storage room of his and Clarice’s lavishly decorated home to sit in his comfortable chair and listen to soothing music he comments that while music can bring relief, when the song ends the problems are still there. This movie contains no drugs, violence or gratuitous sex, but the thoughts expressed in his commentary can be applied beyond.

We learn who Dave is through his commentary as much as we do through his wholesome actions displayed throughout the film. We learn of Clarice and her mother through their despicable character displays, both perfect representations of battle-axes, something a warrior would pick up and use to bludgeon his opponent. Dave is bludgeoned throughout the film as Clarice and her mother never strike deadly, just enough to inflict pain and a flinching remembrance, something to look forward to.  Yet Dave continually rise to where he was created to be.

For married couples this is one for your library, for repeated viewing.  B001W9SXU2Not Easily Broken came out in 2009, but is already available on DVD.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (KJV) Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. {10} For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for him hath not another to help him up. {11} Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone? {12} And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
