The Unfortunate Victor (Exodus 17:11-12)

The man elected the 44th President of the United States could be a very unfortunate soul. By his own account he decided to run for the Presidency because of the "urgency of the moment." He recognized that our nation was in need of a change and volunteered himself as the catalyst to bring it about. It was his desire to bring about a change in the way things were done so that we could change the direction of our country. We are now 6-months into his administration and as we look at the massive spending bills already passed with more being considered it seems the critically ill patient is being treated with more of the remedies that brought on the illness, and we pity the leader who would go down in history as the man who presided over the collapse of the most powerful nation on earth. And if not for us, he would.

Christians around the country also recognized the urgency of the moment and determined that our champion would not be selected and sent forth alone. So on the Sunday before the presidential election, November 4, 2008, local churches around the country prayed for the deliverance of our nation and wisdom for whomever would be elected our leader. Those prayers were followed by prayers for President-elect Obama and his administration at midweek service, the Friday night prayer meetings and the Sundays that followed. Our prayers were based on 2 Chronicles 7:14, "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." Even now we remind God of our prayers based on His words and we remind ourselves of 1 John 5:14-15, "And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: {15} And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him." So now, having the assurance that our prayers are answered we continually praise Him for what is sure to be counted as a victory for the sitting president as he presides over the recovery of our nation.

As we serve God and praise and thank Him for what He has done and what is now on its way because of what we have done, we dig ourselves out of what even now appears to be a situation from which there is no victory. But as Psalms 67:5-6 attests to the unlimited power in praise, we praise Him that He is God now, not tomorrow or yesterday, but now!

Years from now when the events of the 44th Presidency of the United States are recalled, it must be said that Barack Huesin Obama came to power at a time of great urgency and was surrounded by a people who knew the living God and had the wisdom to hold up the hands of their champion.

Exodus 17:11-12 (KJV) And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. {12} But Moses' hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

Psalms 67:5-6 (KJV) Let the people praise thee, O God; let all the people praise thee. {6} Then shall the earth yield her increase; and God, even our own God, shall bless us.
